Modern Tactics 4 Demo Released

I just uploaded the short demo of MT4. It only contains one level and you cannot leave it. The next version will contain more content.

Tell me what you think. I took the good things from MT3 and brought it all back.

i think it's pretty good. the game is smooth and looks nice. although the gun holding animation needs work but I'm sure he knows that. and getting shot animation could be bloodier. but the biggest problems i see is
1)not being able to select the unit that i want to move. i mean that we have to move the units in the order that they are presented. and 2)having to press "end turn"
i know it sounds small but it really slows down the game play and makes it frustrating. i liked how it was in MTO. that was the best. also

3)not being able to crouch
4)no red movement tiles.
5)no knifing.
but I'm guessing this will be added later on considering this is still a very early preview. so good job so far lautan. i haven;t found any bugs yet. keep up the good work.

Lautan for the "Moral" bar, im supposing you spelt "Morale" wrong :) Also, when i go up to the enemy's face and shoot, my Mg36 dude only does 15's on him. What? So my point is that you should make it,the closer you are to the enemy, the more damage you should inflict on them.

Geez, that's a tough demo....All I got were 3 MP5s, a Kriss Super, and a Dragunov, while the enemy had 2 of what appeared to be M200s(which can shoot ANYWHERE on the map), 2 M16s(which destroyed my team), and some other gun I didn't recognize(it still killed half my guys). Could you balance out the demo a bit?

nice! i missed picking which soldier you move with but i guess it adds to the difficulty. everything is good, but what about aiming and crouching?

When one of my guys had a Rpg-7 i was happy but then when i shot it, there was no splash damage and it only did 60! Could you please tweak the rpg so it is better? Also when i won, i unlocked 2 helmets and 1 laser sight. I thought they already had helmets? Another question, when i have a cool gun and then my soldier dies, will he lose it?

I've got seven things missing from this demo. Addition to the final version would be much appreciated.

First, give us the choice of which soldier we move. Second, add crouching, crawling, and aiming. Third, KNIFE! WHERE IS MY KNIFE!?!? Fourth, a good soldier never leaves camp without his sidearm. Fifth, grenades are usually helpful. Sixth, more dirty, rugged looking terrain. Seventh, make it easier to distinguish squads.

If these were the good things from MT3 that you were talking about, where are they? Thank you for putting up with my criticism.

I thought this was supposed to be "Modern Tactics?" It seemed like Knight Tactics but with guns. I'm also confused on how this whole ammo system works. The bullets are how many times you can fire or what? cuz' it's not like that with some weapons. Also need some team variety, the little shoulder mark colors aren't enough to stop me from shooting my own teammates. There's a lot more that needs to be done too, but I've said enough. Good thing it's only a Demo.

But wait! There's more! Maybe I just suck, but I find it odd how the cpu manages to hit me with every shot for about 60,000,000+ damage, and I'm lucky to hit them once for 14. Also, you might want to fix the undo command. It's doing the same thing as in WWII Tactics where it won't let you undo at exactly the wrong time. Anyone who's played WWIIT probably knows what I mean. And one more thing. Could you change the quick-keys back to the arrangement used in the other MT games? Switching to number keys all of a sudden is kind of awkward.

As long as it dosent have the clunky interface and balancing that KT2 had, im fine! (knight tactics 2 and knight tactics are terrible, MT3 on the otherhand, was awesome!!!!) And, what happened to MTO, wasnt that supposed to be MT4?

OMG I tried it, are you kidding me? this is a massive step back from modern tactics 3, you should've just copied the engine/mechanics from MT3 but you chose to model it on Knight tactics 2, (same interface), really, you must be joking, ill stick to MT3 until this is fixed.

The gun movement doesn't seem to be in sinc with the hands. I do like the addition of multiple shots per attack and gun jams, but PLEASE differentiate the teams more. I found myself almost shooting my own men before I realized the patches were different

idk about you guys but i can tell my people apart fine, and i like the idea of miltiple shots from an assault rifle because its realistic. also mt3ftw, though you bring up some good points please dont bash the beta its like step 1 out of like 30 im sure.

true true. it is very early. but at least we are making sure he knows what we would like to see in the final version and what we feel needs to be there and what should go away. i am however excited about the morale thingy at the top. is that going to be the suppression system i suggested before? i hope so. and i definitely agree that the hot keys should be like they were in MTO or WW2T. it's just easier to get to them and allows for smoother game play in my opinion. and guns do jam a bit too often. i mean i saw a AK jam like 3 times once. it should be very rare for an AK to jam since it's one of the most reliable weapons ever made. it should have like a 0.1% chance of jamming lol. and some of the machine guns have damage that is lower than a sub-machine gun. so if you could increase the damage a bit to make light mg's better that would be nice. and i also noticed that i haven't made a single one turn kill. it always takes more than shot to kill an enemy. i know you may be trying to make it harder but i would like a few of them every once in a while. it gives you that feeling of satisfaction whenever it happens. like in MT3.

oh wait i did find some bugs. a few times i was able to take my turn twice in a row before the AI moved. and another time just one guy was able to move, shoot, then move and reload. kinda strange. I'm not sure if he was my only guy left though.

The demo was fine, but it really did seem so foreign compared to MT3. The interface in MT3 was easy to navigate, fast paced, and had strategy to it. Though this is just a demo, can you please make it more like modern tactics games? Also, I had a guy with a .50 caliber sniper rifle, and every time he fired it jammed, and when he did fire it did 15 damage. A guy on the other team though, had a P90 that fired from the other side of the map and was an instant kill. Can you please fix this and make it more like MT3?

I don't really think Lautan has taken much of the "good" things from MT3. As many have said there is no knife, grenades, hotkeys, body movements, secondaries etc. I also found out there is no splash damage from explosive weapons like Rpg-7 and M79, when i played the demo. Honestly, i think that if Lautan doesn't put more good things into MT4, many people wouldn't like it as much as MT3.

Well, there is some good things about it. I take the "gun jamming" as the new way of saying "miss", which really shook things up in mt3. I actually like the low ammo, it forces you to think twice about running into a room with 4 guys when you only have 3 shots (not to mention it's a good regulator for sniper rifles). And climbing through windows is back, which is awesome.


But I really wish he would add at least the crouch, if not crouch and prone. I really do feel like I'm playing knight tactics with ranged weapons sometimes

Well, drivable cars and vehicles would unbalance the game, and you would have to always have an anti-tank guy or two. One team could also just get all the vehicles and just drive around the map.

Like the looks of the guns, like the User Interface, and the guns jamming, but one thing that i am disturbed by is the guns... i dunno if it's just like that for now, but the range is ridiculous... Also, is there gonna be a aiming option or crouching and stuff like that? Also the reloading thing, you press reload, but it doesnt reload until you click twice on your own character. No biggie. Other than that it looks like a great and small and under developed sample >.<

Shooting through windows? In MT3, i feel it was annoying because it made it inaccurate, but when an enemy does it, it's just normal accuracy. Maybe something like if your shooting right beside the window than accuracy doesn't change, but if your further away from the window than it's harder to shoot em

ok, things i'd like to see:
1.crouch/prone
2.aim
3.knife
4.grenades
5.critical hits(if there arent already)
6.vehicles(drivable or stationary, either way, they could just be like idk 4 or 6 spaces so not huge)
7.splash damage(feels weird hitting a guy with an rpg and his buddy beside him is fine)
8.shooting at the ground(i know it sounds stupid but if someones around the corner you should be able to put that rpg to use)
9.destructable walls
10.glass(idk why but windows are just weird all open like that, plus it gives the guy a second to move if someone does come in via window
11.customizable/different people
12.closer=more accuracy/damage(again, not sure if its already there but just to be sure) and visa versa
i think thats enough to keep you reading for atleast a couple minutes by now, lol, might come back with other ideas in different post.

I don't like critical hits. It's all based on luck, nothing tactical about it. It makes you feel hopeless in battle when you have to rely on it. If you do, then your team isn't good enough, switch it up. It also takes the point away from aiming. That's what it was like in KT2 No aiming, but with random critical hits. I hated that. The opposing team gets 3 critical hits in a row.. and you don't get any. Makes you mad, and you can't do anything about it. Don't make vehicles drivable either, just stationary. Otherwise it's a whole new game.

Seems to work fine, but all the features of the game need to be more implemented because right now, the game is running around with random jamming weapons and weird accuracy. Be nice to see what it leads to.

well you have to imagine that some part of war is luck, either critical hits or head shots would be a nice twist or else all guns would do the same damage, the same everything, the vehicles could be interesting you just gotta be open minded about it i would like them but maybe in a different game or stationary in this 1.

If you have vehicles it would look like more like a battlefield, it doesn't always have to be just building and windows in each battle. I also see what you mean spartan, maybe there could be critical hits, but I don't want them occurring too often.

I love how people think its sooo different from mt3 because of the graphics. I think its good. The game is a BETA. The reason he released it so early is so he can use your feedback for the game. I don't know about prone, but i really liked crouch. Definitely a class editor. It seems like the LMGs don't do too much damage so maybe make it so soldiers have a higher chance of getting pinned or running away if they are shot at too much with the LMG. Looks good so far

yeah maps need smoother scrolling, plus the truth remains that vehicles would make it look alot more urban, not nessisary, but really useful for towns and such, plus you could make them explode maybe it hit with rpg or takes so much damage, and yeah destructo has a good point with the LMGs to weak but rather than cranking it up make a chance of pinning guys, where prone could come in, makes guys less accurate and only occurs commonly if morale is low, plus ni know criticals would get annoying 24/7 but so are the gun jams, just turn em right down low and you'll be fine.

I think there could be stationary vehicles that could be used as an extraction point after completing the objectives. Or, you could use destroyed vehicles as just a thing that adds to the realistic-ness of the game.

The problem with vehicles is that, for each soldier on the battlefield, Lautan has to keep track of where it is(it's x and y), what gun, what uniform, and so forth. If you had vehicles lautan would have to keep track of mutiple x's and y's, and it would be a pain to program the shooting, (what square is the center on a 2 x 3 tank?). Plus, he would have to widen the maps to make them actually not overkill.

We are only making suggestions Weasel, so you don't have go as far as that it will be a pain for Lautan to put in vehicles. He is the final decider in all of this anyway. If you ask me, he should go the extra step, and then learn more about programming in the long run. He'll get better at what he does and can make better games in the end. We all want the game to be good right? We don't want the game to be rushed or let out too soon. If Lautan likes the challenge then he should try it. It's already quite the feat, that he's doing this all on his own... or am I wrong about that part? Anyway, Let's move on. We don't have to keep arguing about if the vehicles will work or not, it's only one aspect of the game.

I do not want vehicles. At all... that would be too cheap... First one to the vehicle wins? And if you put vehicles just for cover what is the point? Sand bags can easily replace that... Just make something in the environment that's unique and not in the other modern tactics..

I think the whole vehicle thing doesn't really fit the tile thing. I mean, you could add one that's like 3 by 2 tiles but that is way different from anything in any ttp games.

no drago, i think we all agreed that they would be stationaries so it isnt to cheap seeing as a turret would only have so much range on it, also, sand bags could not replace vehicles, towns dont have random sand bags everywhere(excluding some places in our current situation) so it would be weird although i do like the idea of sand bags aswell, to put an end to this and get to other matters... why doent lautan make a small demo, or replicate the one he has and add a vehicle in it so we can see what it would be like. just something small like a 3x2 truck, turret on one side of the back. worth a shot, but it would be a game delay if he went through with it, so, who agrees on the demo to be replicated with a truck or something and see where it goes, if we like it he could look into it, if not, the idea gets trashed till a later day maybe.

Alright, I could agree with that. Ya and Vehicles can go on any terrain, sandbags will probably only replace it in the desert terrain. I wouldn't mind if it's a game delay either.

I liked the new guns but, as so many have said before me WHERE IS THE KNIFE? And the aiming,and the selection of troop movement order? Customizable troops would be good too and I like the stationary vehicle turret idea. Also 'nades, sidearms,crouch and prone as well as explosive spla sh damage is good. Oh, and what about music and gunfire? I also liked the game showing damage for each hit. At the moment this Game doesn't feel like MT3. It just feels wrong. PS I hope he brings back the "zxc..." hotkeys.

I might switch back to the original hotkeys because in MT4 units will have 10 actions, 4 actions to choose for each unit. Choose actions like, crouch, side arm, grenades, blind fire, etc..

Also i'm keeping dead bodies on the ground and they can be revived. And you can now select which unit to move.

I'm very busy with work. I will try to update the demo by next week.

Defibrillators would only be good if they had a limited amount of use, e.g they can only revive twice before the battery runs out, or something. Yeah and also the destructible walls from MT3. Maybe there could be a "destructible wall" tile which is the only wall tile that can be "destructible". It could be marked with a crack or some sort of symbol.

There are also many realistic flaws with the game. For example the CheyTac "Intervention" sniper rifle does not have 1 round. The picture in-game shows a magazine attached. The way they hold a rocket weapon is wrong. They hold it underarm when it is supposed to be shoulder launched.

The "1 round and reload" on the intervention is to simulate a bolt action rifle

And a good solution for the defibs would to force you to "reload" (recharge) them. Then they could only be used every other turn or something and force a guy to waste an attack move recharging

@BostonFan...Maybe its a placeholder model? But yeah the L82A2 and the TAR-21 have the same basic bullpup design, and are both pretty similar as far as the Grip design goes, so Lautan may have gotten them mixed up.

TAR21 is an Israeli Assault Rifle developed recently as a replacement weapon for the Galils and AKs they already have. It's made by IMI (who made the UZI and Desert Eagle) and was designed by Zelman Shebs, a weaponologist. Basically its really easy to repair, mantain, and it can use both TAR-21 mags and M16 NATO mags, so that it can be exported to other countries like the United States of America. Less than 20% of it is made of metal.

8 explosive splash damage (and maybe that you can shoot an explosive at a tile even if there is no one on it, like if they are around a corner and you cant reach him normally.
9 destroyable walls like doors or windows that you have to break to go through
10 maybe vehicles, but make them so that they are not so powerful, like it has to take two people to operate and also it cannot fit through one tiled doorways because it is too big so it will be restricted to only a certain area.
11 mounted machine guns
12 lower rate of jamming for guns (down to 5% from what feels like 50%), it seems that they jam every other shot. maybe there should be a stat on the gun stats for class customization that shows the rate of jamming, and some guns have higher than others.

For example if you are Counter-terrorists they should have guns like M4, Mp5 etc. And for terrorists they should have the AK47, Ak74su, RPK, Dragunov etc. This is because terrorists shouldn't get their hands on M4's, Mp5s and Barretts.

I dont like how your able to revive, instead id make so that when a unit is down to 10 or so health he is forced to use a side arm and can only move a tile at a time, although instead of having to need a gernade to heal the unit, everybody can. simialar to the bleeding out thing in MW2.

@Quiche-It saddens me to see how people are believing every stereotype and media representation they see about terrorists. First off, terrorists aren't just from the Middle East; they can be from anywhere. Secondly, insurgents in the Middle East DO use captured weapons. There was a case in Afghanistan where an American sniper shot an insurgent that was using an M40A3 taken from a killed Marine. It is fully possible to capture an M4A1.

Lime, i do believe that the Middle Eastern Campaign is the largest and is the "main" counter- terrorism operation that is happening in the world. Also, AK and other variants of it are the most common and main weapon used by Middle Eastern terrorists. Maybe every so often there could be a terrorist wielding a C-T weapon, it is possible but i doubt they can get the right ammo to use it for a long time.

M4s and AKs don't share the same ammo. M4 round is actually lighter than the AK round. Plus Russians don't manufacture rounds for guns they don't make. So that would be quite hard to obtain unless they buy it from black market.

Just look online, there are tons of semi-auto rifles and sniper rifles you could just buy from Cabela's or something.
